How to Write a Crime Novel – Creating Characters
When learning how to write a crime novel character it is important to get an idea from your storyline. If your story is all about crime then you will be creating villain characters. Most ‘how to write a crime novel’ resources state that the easiest way to create a character is to ask yourself the questions below:
1. Ask yourself how your character would describe himself. How does this description differ from the reader’s view of the character?
2. What is the relationship of your character and his family?
3. What are his physical characteristics and do they relate with his role in the crime novel? At this point describe his outward appearance, skin complexion, eye color, height and weight. You can describe him further or let the reader come up with his own visual image of the character.
4. What is your characters’ weakness and strengths that will be manifested in the story? Pick on traits that will make the plot interesting and keep the reader glued to the book.
5. If your character would describe himself in not more than 5 words what would he say?
6. What is your characters’ day like and what does he do for a living?
7. What environment did your character grow up in and how did it affect his life today?
8. What does this character plan to be in the future?
By answering these questions you will easily learn the simple basics of how to write a crime novel characters. Your characters will start to take shape and have a description.
